Booyong

An urban home that seamlessly integrates with nature

7.3 Star NatHERS Rating

The home is a sequence of layered internal spaces and courtyards, each capturing and harnessing northern light to provide tranquillity and warmth throughout the home. Entry to the home is through a private courtyard, allowing the owners and their guests to pause and breathe in nature before entering the house. Movement through the house is guided by connection to nature, with the main circulation spine of the home unfolding around a central courtyard to bring the outdoors into the heart of the home. The contrast between the natural rough materiality of the recycled brick and the clean lines of the timber is carried through to the interiors, providing a warm and textural backdrop to the living spaces within the home.

As a renovation project to an existing heritage home, it can sometimes be challenging to reach our carbon reduction targets. The existing house had a low energy rating due to lack of insulation and high performance glazing, while also being powered by a gas hot water system and heated by a gas-powered hydronic system.
