Our Co-Founder and Director Dave Martin doesn’t just create homes at The Cape, he lives there too. Australia’s first genuine Eco Village holds a special place in his heart. He lives and breathes environmentally sustainable design, development and practice, and The Cape combines every aspect.

Dave’s love of nature was instilled in him from a young age. His parents took him on hikes and adventures throughout Victoria’s high plains; Mount Bogong, Feathertop, and Cradle Mountain in Tasmania. His childhood involved more outdoor activities than theme parks, which Dave and his brothers would sometimes complain about. As they grew older, they realised how lucky they were to spend those formative years in the breath-taking natural world.

During Dave’s early career as a builder, he noticed the homes they built weren’t very efficient or comfortable to live in. So he started pushing for change, and the journey eventually led him to founding The Sociable Weaver.

As a father of four, Dave thinks about his children’s future, and their children’s future, and strives to create a better world for them. The Iroquois people of Native America governed their society by The Seventh Generation Principle; they considered the well-being of seven generations ahead in every word they spoke and action they took. We also subscribe to this philosophy.

Our mission is to live in harmony with nature, animals, plants, sun, wind, rain, ocean, land, the mountains, and everything else. We want to reconnect people with nature through the buildings we design, the projects we develop, and the places we build.

We still have a long way to go, but every small action we take contributes to creating a better world for future generations.
