Over the last 10 years, we have grown in more ways than one. We heard from you, reflected on our journey, and took time to really distil what we are focused on solving and the impact we want to have in the world. In this article we step through our evolution and where we’re going.

So, allow us to (re) introduce ourselves.

We are a design and construction firm that creates architectural homes inspired by nature. Our purpose is to craft homes that go beyond bricks and mortar, inspiring connections to nature, community, and personal well-being. We are committed to environmental responsibility, creating regenerative, carbon-neutral homes that stand as examples of great sustainable housing. We care about people, relationships, and the planet, and aim to explore and demonstrate new sustainable building practices while providing practical, inspiring, and environmentally conscious homes.

What is a Sociable Weaver?

The Sociable Weaver is a remarkable bird found in Southern Africa, known for building intricate communal nests atop trees and power lines. These nests, reaching heights of up to four metres, accommodate hundreds of birds and provide both socialisation and solitude. Constructed with twigs, stems, and grasses, these nests offer year-round thermal comfort, with insulated central chambers for winter and ventilated outer chambers for summer. Resilient and enduring, these nests last for centuries, housing multiple generations.

"Our goal is to cultivate meaningful living experiences that enrich the lives of inhabitants and contribute positively to our environment."

- Michael Nowlan, Architect & Head of Design

Homes that harmonise with nature require innovation and vision

We aim to design homes and streetscapes that encourage meaningful interactions while respecting the need for solitude. Our homes instil a sense of belonging, connecting residents to their environment, community, and themselves. Prioritising thoughtful solutions, we seek inspiration from others and embrace innovative ideas that go beyond the norms while being practical and accessible for clients.

It's not just about positively impacting the planet; it's about fostering a deeper connection to nature and promoting overall well-being. We aim to create homes that demonstrate the practicality of sustainable, beautiful living spaces and hope we encourage others to do the same.

From inception to completion

We’re not like other design and construct firms — and that’s something we are proud of. The Sociable Weaver designs & builds homes from inception to completion. We’re here to support you through architecture, interior design, sustainability analysis, town planning, landscaping design, documentation and construction. This approach ensures efficient and comprehensive execution. We construct under the Martin Builders building licence.

Offgrid Australian Outback inspired embodying three P’s of intention

Driftwood: Wadawurrung Country, Victorian Surf Coast

Driftwood, nestled on eight acres on the Surf Coast, epitomises off-grid living with complete self-sufficiency in power, water, and waste management. It embodies the three P's of Intention - People, Planet, and Profit, showcasing a deep commitment to sustainability in its design.

Inspired by the rugged Australian outback shed, Driftwood's material palette features galvanised corrugated steel and shiplap timber cladding, perfectly suited to endure the coastal environment. You can read more about Driftwood and the future of housing on our blog or featured on ABI Interiors.

Bungalow: Boonwurrung Country Bass Coast

The Bungalow is an exploration of small footprint living, emphasising light, height, and functionality to create a spacious atmosphere within its 112 sqm area. Its minimalist design reflects a practical lifestyle, with the ground floor housing the main bedroom, bathroom, and open-plan living space.

Upstairs, a double-height ceiling expands the living area, while a second mezzanine level accommodates additional bedrooms and a bathroom. This property is a reminder that we don’t need large amounts of physical space to feel spacious. You can explore more on the Bungalow and other sustainable homes on our blog or featured on The Local Project.

The tranquillity of an urban home that seamlessly integrates with nature

Booyong: Boonwurrung Country, Melbourne

The Booyong home is a sequence of layered internal spaces and courtyards, each capturing and harnessing northern light to provide tranquillity and warmth throughout the home. The contrast between recycled brick and timber materials creates a warm and textured backdrop for the living areas.

Movement within the house is guided by a connection to nature, with the main circulation spine unfolding around a central courtyard, blending indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly. You can learn more about the future of sustainable housing and beautiful homes like the Bungalow on our blog or featured on The Design Files.
