8.5 Star NatHERS Rating

Located in Neerim Junction, at the southern foothills of the Great Dividing Range, this home is a celebration of the breathtaking Australian landscape. Elevated above the valley’s cloud line, the home commands panoramic views towards the Yarra Ranges & Mount Buller, while comfortably nestling into the existing landscape. The design features a fluid curved form that elegantly follows the contour of the landscape to capture the stunning views and optimise solar orientation. Achieving an 8.5 star NatHERS energy rating, the dwelling is a testament to sustainability, being fully off-grid, utilising solar energy, harvested rainwater, and on-site waste management systems. The internal spaces have been thoughtfully designed in a linear composition to ensure all rooms within the home have a strong relationship with the surrounding landscape. The layout includes four thoughtfully designed bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two powder rooms, alongside an expansive open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area. The curved rammed earth wall sweeps along the contour of the landscape, providing a sense of privacy, protection and arrival to the home. The warmth, heaviness and tactility of the rammed earth contrasts with the lightweight charred timber cladding and high-performance glazing of the northern facade, creating a dynamic interplay between solidity and transparency.

As a renovation project to an existing heritage home, it can sometimes be challenging to reach our carbon reduction targets. The existing house had a low energy rating due to lack of insulation and high performance glazing, while also being powered by a gas hot water system and heated by a gas-powered hydronic system.
