Karkalla is designed as a simple form which greets the street with a soft and natural material palette set amongst an Australian native garden. Being on one of the main thoroughfares of The Cape housing estate, the street facade maintains a modest and private presence, with a façade that tapers up to the north and a recessed entry softly welcoming you home through a dusty pink front door. All living and bedroom spaces open up to the northern garden and enjoy an outlook to the surrounding landscape to maintain the connection to nature throughout the home. The materiality is natural and raw, with the intention for the Iron Ash timber cladding to silver off naturally as the building ages unifying it with the beauty of the surrounding landscape and coastline.

As a renovation project to an existing heritage home, it can sometimes be challenging to reach our carbon reduction targets. The existing house had a low energy rating due to lack of insulation and high performance glazing, while also being powered by a gas hot water system and heated by a gas-powered hydronic system.
