7.5 Star NatHERS Rating
At the end of a quiet lane sits a small block of land home to a modest footprint two bedroom house, previously left vacant and used as a carpark. The efficient and multi-functional 98sqm house footprint was designed to reduce the owners’ environmental impact on the land and challenge conventional large scale housing typologies. The entry to the house greets guests with a naturally lit, verdant courtyard home to a deciduous weeping silver birch, immediately instilling a sense of calm and connection to nature on arrival. The entry is the axis between private and communal spaces, with bedrooms and bathroom to the left, and a beautifully generous, light-filled kitchen, living & dining space to the right. The home was designed specifically to avoid wasted space such as corridors and maximise energy efficiency, achieving a 9 star NatHERS rated living area and an overall 7.5 star NatHERS rated house, meaning no heating and cooling loads and associated energy bills due to the orientation, thermal mass, insulation and high performance timber framed glazing.

As a renovation project to an existing heritage home, it can sometimes be challenging to reach our carbon reduction targets. The existing house had a low energy rating due to lack of insulation and high performance glazing, while also being powered by a gas hot water system and heated by a gas-powered hydronic system.
