We hope 2023 has been good to you. It’s been a big one at The Sociable Weaver — massively challenging and equally if not more rewarding, as tends to be the case.
Like always, this year our goal was to design and build beautiful homes that inspire connection and leave the smallest carbon footprint possible. With every house we created we got to do a little bit more for the planet. Stick by stick, nail by nail (you get the picture) we’re trying to build a more sustainable future.
2023 was all about celebrating the wins, because they’re what count in the end, right?
Here’s our highlights for 2023
11 homes
We handed over the keys to 11 homes built and designed by us.
11 new friends
Over months and years of dreaming and creating together, we’re lucky to call our clients friends. We wish you so much happiness in your new homes.
Impact and recognition
We ran Life Cycle Assessments on 11 of our homes, over their lifetimes they will…
9,000 tonnes lower C02
Emit less carbon than the average home across their lifespan (9,000 tonnes less on average).
55,000 trees
Equivalent of 55,000 newly planted trees.
2,252 cars off the road
The homes’ low emissions are also the equivalent of taking 2,252 cars off the road for a year. Equivalent of taking 2,252 cars off the road for a year.
3 award nominations
We were finalists in the HIA Eastern Victoria Regional Housing Awards in two categories for our Karkalla house, and our Booyong house was nominated for a 2023 Sustainability Award.
1st Certified Passive Build & Design company in Melbourne
Our designers Noa and Michael became Passive House Certified Designers. Our founder Dave was already a Passive House Certified Builder, which makes us the first Melbourne company to offer Certified Passive Build and Design services under one roof. We wrote a blog about it if you’re keen to find out more.
256 new ways of sharing our journey
This year we’ve upped the quality and quantity of articles, behind the scenes photos and videos, along with the more polished, professional photography (the lush imagery that coos design). We want to share the real story about who we are and what we think — not just glamour shots.
1 Brushtail Rock Wallaby Sanctuary
In November our team day was on-site with environmental charity Odonata to build sanctuary fencing for endangered species like the Southern Brushtail Rock Wallaby. A portion of our company profits will go to Odonata’s Rejuvenation Tree program as part of our initiative to plant 3000 trees. It was a great day to spend together as a team, we’re all looking forward to the next one.
2 babies (1 with fur, 1 without)
Mick and his partner welcomed their first child into the world!! And Michael has welcomed a Labrador puppy named Lola.
1 extra special note from a client
The reason we do all this is to help people create a home that reconnects them with nature, themselves and each other. We love hearing when we’ve achieved that like this one from our client in Dromana.
“Thanks seems inadequate. I absolutely love my new home in fact it is overwhelming. The proportions, the clean lines, the airy light spaces it is beyond what I imagined. The approach and attention to the smallest details just adds. Your ethos and workmanship is exemplary it has been a pleasure to work with you all.” — Nola, Dromana
That’s it from us.
Take care of each other and see you in 2024.
